Crib Mattress Safety

When you lay your child down to sleep you never want to second think the safety of their mattress. The sad thing is that it is something that should be thought about, especially if you aren’t 100 percent sure it is the right one. You need to make sure it is the right fit, has the best material for your child, especially if they have allergies, and you need to be aware of the risks of mattresses that are too soft, and here is why.

SIDS

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, more commonly known as “SIDS”, is an extremely scary thing to think about. I have personally never had to deal with it, but with the US rate of 4,000 deaths per year from SIDS, I do often think about it and always rethink my mattress choice. It is claimed that toxic gasses from crib mattresses is one of the culprits of this unthinkable occurrence. The gas is created when the chemical compounds that make the mattress fire retardant mixes with a naturally growing fungus found in bedding. If the baby absorbs too much of this gas mixture, SIDS or SUDS happens without a sound. This is why it is extremely important to weigh all of your crib bedding options before you just throw anything in it for your baby to sleep on, maybe even switching to organic.

Peplace Blankets With Memory Foam

You may think that the mattress your baby is sleeping on is not comfortable enough for them so you decide to add a little more plush to it with a blanket or something else of the sort. If you do this, you should stop. If you don’t think that their mattress isn’t soft enough, then I would suggest finding the best memory foam crib mattress that is safe enough for them. The reason I say this is because I made that mistake with my first born. I had gotten a mattress as a gift for my crib and it just didn’t seem soft enough so I put a blanket in there for my son to lay on. He kept grabbing the blanket and pulling it over his face. Keep in mind, this was when he was old enough to start grabbing and rolling. Anyway, he wrapped himself in the blanket and then he couldn’t unwrap himself. Once I noticed, he was sweaty and warm. After this happened, I threw away his old mattress and started looking for a memory foam one that gave him the same comfort as when he had the blanket under him, and yes, such infant and toddler mattress do exist and they are wonderful.

What to Look For

Your baby is going to spend a lot of time in their crib, then when they get older they may use that same mattress for their toddler bed. This is why you should look for one that has high ratings and recommendations. So, what exactly is it that you should look for in a top rated crib mattress?

Quality

One of the most vital things that you can look for in a good crib mattress, is quality. Cheap mattresses are going to have a thin vinyl covering that is going to dry out, crack, and tear over time. If you are looking to use it as your child grows up, look for something that has reinforced double or even triple laminates. This will keep the cracks away for a longer period of time. You can also go for an innerspring mattress that has a better cushion quality and a better gauge steel. If you are considering a foam mattress, look for something that is made of a more dense and better quality foam. The better quality mattresses will run you around $90-$200, but in the long run your wallet will thank you when you aren’t opening it to buy a new mattress once every 2 years as your child grows.

Convertibility

If you plan on using the baby’s crib as a toddler bed once they are older, you should consider looking into mattresses that have dual-firmness. These mattresses are wonderful when it comes time to convert. When you child is a baby, you are going to want them on something that is extra firm for infants. As they grow, they are going to want something a little softer, this is where the dual-firmness comes in. Instead of having to buy a new crib mattress, all you will need to do is flip it over when it is time. The best time to flip it is on their first birthday when the risk of SIDS decreases.

Protection

Every now and then a leak is going to happen, whether it is from a full diaper or a potty training accident. This is something to think about when buying a crib mattress. You are going to want to keep it nice and moisture free, so how else to do this than to purchase a mattress protector. Yes, most mattresses are waterproof anyway and can simply be wiped down after an accident, but unless it is organic, it is probably going to end up growing mold anyway. So, even though the mattress may say it is waterproof, grab the cover anyway, just to be on the safe side. Also, it will extend the life of the mattress.

Davinci Twilight Hypoallergenic Universal Fit Waterproof 6-inch Ultra Firm Deluxe Crib Mattress

Right off the bat, this mattress caught my attention by being adhesive, lead, TRIS, phthalates, and toxic flame retardant free. If I am looking for something that is going to be safe for my baby, this would be it. The fact that it doesn’t have harmful chemicals in it is a great feature. Its hypoallergenic construction makes it even more appealing and much more safe for an infant.

Unfortunately, the only catch to this mattress is that it only fits into one of the MDB family cribs. This isn’t to say that it can’t possibly fit into another crib, but it has only been used and is recommended for those types of cribs. It would be best to measure your crib and get the measurements for the mattress to ensure a proper fit.

The Best One Is..

After carefully reading the reviews and thinking about what I would want for my own child, I have come to the conclusion that the best crib mattress would have to be the Simmons Kids Beautyrest Beginnings Sleepy Whispers Ultra Deluxe 2 in 1 Crib and Toddler Mattress.

I chose this mattress because for starters, it is 2-in-1 which will save you money in the long run. For two, it has excellent GREEN ratings backed by a lifetime limited warranty. The fact that my baby would be sleeping on something that is backed by its maker instead of a cheap product that had no warranty would be more than convincing enough for me. Not to mention, this mattress is made by a well known company and not someone who is just in it for the money with no real name.
